The Oostvaardersplassen
The Oostvaardersplassen are a unique and important wetland reserve in the central part of the Netherlands. Just a 30 minute drive from Amsterdam this is the ideal location to watch birds year round. During winter thousands of ducks and geese are visiting this area and quite often Great White-fronted, Barnacle, Pink-footed and sometimes even Red-breasted geese can be found here. Also Smew, Goldeneye and Goosander, Bearded Reedling, Great Grey Shrike, Raven and Goshawk are found in this area. During spring the amount of warblers and migratory birds are truly remarkable. With good circumstances and a little bit of luck we might be able to see 80+ species during a morning visit. Birds we can find in spring are Bluethroat, Grasshopper Warbler, Savi's Warbler, Sedge Warbler, Cetti's Warbler, and Marsh Warbler. Besides that the Oostvaardersplassen are famous for their White-tailed Eagles. It’s the first site they started to breed at in the Netherlands and they can be found year round.
